What to base my animation on?

To figure out what to base my animation on I thought about what has been recently universally popular.  My initial idea was to animate scenes of some of my favourite movies.  The movies I would have chosen would be from lists of popular movies, not necessarily recent movies just popular.
But I began to feel that this approach was too broad. Having a series of small animated clips from seemingly random movies was going to be too incoherent. So I worked on focusing my idea.

At this stage I was still intent on animating a series of movies scenes. Quentin Tarantino is one of my favourite directors and his movies are undoubtedly popular and part of pop culture. I had planned on animating movies scenes specifically from Tarantino's filmography

Kill Bill/ Pulp Fiction/ Reservoir Dogs

Although Tarantino's movies are very popular I wanted my animation to be based on something more recent and firmly in peoples minds. So I began to look at a different medium, namely popular TV shows.
